Barrie and Claire Hawker embarked on the incredible West Highland Way, comprising a 96 mile walk which they completed in just 8 days.
Rallying together their friends and family, the couple have raised over £1200 for our hospice.
The couple live in Poynton, being local to our Heald Green site, with Barrie driving past it every week. Claire also sings in a local choir which chose us to be their Charity of the Year this year.
Barrie says: “Claire and I wanted to raise some money and thought we would like to do a sponsored walk to fundraise which added an extra level to our walk. It was great being sponsored by so many people as we had a reason to keep them updated with our progress and we could remind others to donate too!”
The walk was run by Macs Adventure, organising the trip for Barrie and Claire to start from Milngavie, just outside Glasgow, to Fort William. The couple saw Ben Nevis at the end of their walk which was a real highlight for them.
“This was definitely the most challenging walk we’ve ever done, although the big mountains that surrounded us did make for beautiful scenery as we walked.
“We’ve never done a big walk in Scotland before, so we wanted to go somewhere different and thought why not conquer Scotland!”
Barrie and Claire have currently raised over £1200, and they’re hoping this number will keep rising with extra donations coming in now they’ve completed the challenge.
“Once we started to tell friends and family that we were raising money for St Ann’s Hospice, we heard lots of stories of those who knew the hospice well through loved ones being treated there. It became important to us then to raise as much as we could for the charity.”
