As the project manager for the new St Ann’s Hospice, I’m delighted to tell you what we’ve been up to and all the amazing things to come.
My wife lost her mum and sister to cancer within six months of each other, so I know how vital hospices are to a community. When we moved to Stockport 10 years ago everyone was so welcoming, and St Ann’s is a symbol of that warmth.
We’ve faced sky-rocketing material costs and legislation changes. But working with St Ann’s on their new hospice, the architects, engineers and contractors we found ways to build more cost effectively – without compromising the world-class care.
We want everyone to know that every penny donated through St Ann’s Build it Together appeal, which is aiming to raise the final £2m needed to make the new hospice a reality, is being used in the right place.
The site in Heald Green next door to the current hospice has now been cleared and we’re excited to lay the drainage and foundations, and soon you’ll see some walls going up.
We’re excited for the interior design plans to come to life too, which your donation could help to create.
There will be large airy windows to let light flood into the bedrooms and a haven for families and patients to relax and reflect. We will have a welcoming and spacious reception and waiting areas for patients arriving to The Being You Centre for outpatient services. There will also be a glass link corridor that brings the beautiful, landscaped gardens to our patients without having to step outside.
It feels amazing to help build a new hospice that will care for Manchester families for generations to come.
The support from the community so far has been incredible – this is one of the most heart-warming projects I’ve ever worked on. But there’s a long way to go.
