The Build It Together Appeal has reached an amazing fundraising milestone and we can now celebrate raising £1 million for our new hospice!

This incredible total is thanks to the generosity of individuals and organisations in the local community and beyond, and everyone at the hospice is so grateful to those supporters. This is now the half way point in our public appeal to raising the final £2 million we need to build a new hospice for the future of St Ann’s.

Anne Marie Wynne, Head of Fundraising and Capital Campaign, said “We are all so excited to reach this midway point in our fundraising and can’t thank our supporters enough. It is an inspiration to hear of all the events and donations that have come together to make this huge amount of money.

“All of this incredible support makes a huge difference and brings our vision for a new purpose-built hospice closer to reality.”

This milestone in fundraising coincides with the first signs of building work starting on the new land whether the hospice is being built. The contractors have started on site to clear the overgrown land to make way for a new access road and services to the site.

Rachel McMillan, Chief Executive of St Ann’s, said: “Our existing Heald Green hospice has served us well, but it was never intended to be a hospice at all – it was originally a school. And at over 150 years old, and with Victorian plumbing and a roof that often needs patching up, we cannot keep making do and mending for much longer.

“To see work starting on the land and to receive news that we have reached the half way point in our fundraising all in the same week has been incredible. What a way to start 2024 – a year that promises to be full of progress for our new hospice.”

In total, building the new hospice will cost around £ £22.5 million, which includes buying the land next door to our existing hospice site. This will be money well spent. Unlike our more modern hospice in Little Hulton, Heald Green has very few private bedrooms for patients and very limited outdoor space.

The new hospice will include private bedrooms for our patients so they and their loved ones can have the privacy they deserve at this important time. We are taking care to build our new hospice into the existing landscape – meaning there will be much bigger gardens, and lovely mature trees surrounding the hospice building. A suitable environment is such an important part of feeling comfortable and that is why we at St Ann’s our working so hard to make the new hospice a reality.
